Mouthwashing Anya: Her Role, Backstory, and Tragic Fate

Who Is Anya in Mouthwashing?

The Mouthwashing Anya storyline makes the Tulpar terrifying long before its supplies run out. Anya is the ship’s nurse, an aspiring medical student trying to care for a crew that fails to protect her. Understanding her relationships with Jimmy and Curly changes how you read the game’s repeated demand to take responsibility.

Major story spoilers follow, including discussion of sexual assault, pregnancy, and suicide.

Anya handles medical care aboard the Pony Express freighter, including caring for Captain Curly after the crash leaves him severely injured and unable to speak. Before the crash, her work also includes psychological evaluations. These responsibilities place her close to the crew’s physical and emotional vulnerabilities, even while her own safety receives far less attention.

Anya’s Medical Training and Backstory

Anya has tried to get into medical school eight times without succeeding. She takes the job aboard the Tulpar because she needs money to continue pursuing that goal.

Her nursing qualification comes from Pony Express training classes. That qualification applies only aboard company property and within its jurisdiction, making her position different from having a broadly recognized nursing credential.

That distinction matters when Jimmy attacks her competence. Anya has limited formal qualifications, but she continues studying and carrying out difficult responsibilities under increasingly desperate conditions. Her background gives her a concrete ambition beyond the ship: she wants the education and career she has repeatedly worked toward.

She also reads extensively about psychology during the voyage. Paired with her role conducting psychological evaluations, that interest adds another dimension to her medical ambitions.

Jimmy’s Abuse and Distorted Perspective

Jimmy sexually assaulted Anya, and she becomes pregnant. His abuse is central to understanding her fear and the imbalance of power aboard the ship.

After the crash, much of the story unfolds through Jimmy’s perspective. He treats Anya’s requests for help as evidence that she cannot do her job, berating her when she struggles to administer Curly’s pain medication.

Pay attention to what Anya asks Jimmy to do, rather than accepting his judgment of her. Several of his useful contributions begin with her identifying a problem and directing him toward a task. The difference between her actions and his interpretation exposes how he dismisses her work while depending on it.

Her difficulty caring for Curly also carries a weight that Jimmy refuses to acknowledge: she is treating a severely injured patient while trapped alongside her abuser.

Curly’s Failure to Protect Her

Before the crash, Anya trusts Curly enough to tell him she is pregnant. As captain, he occupies the position of authority she turns to for help.

Curly’s friendship with Jimmy complicates that responsibility. He helped Jimmy obtain the co-pilot position, and his response to the situation fails to secure Anya’s safety.

Their relationship makes the game’s theme of responsibility especially uncomfortable. Hearing someone disclose a crisis creates an obligation that reassurance alone cannot fulfill. Curly’s concern does not produce the protection Anya needs.

What Happens to Anya?

Anya eventually locks herself inside the medical room and dies by suicide through an overdose. Her death happens off-screen.

By this point, she has endured Jimmy’s abuse, the pregnancy, the crash, and the pressure of caring for others aboard a ship with dwindling resources. Her storyline places those circumstances together without giving her a safe escape.

The attempt to enter the medical room also leads to another tragedy. Jimmy persuades Daisuke to crawl through a dangerous vent, where he suffers severe injuries.

When following these scenes, separate the order in which the game presents events from their chronological order. The narrative moves between periods before and after the crash, gradually revealing information that changes the meaning of earlier conversations.

Anya’s Life Beyond the Medical Room

Anya spends much of her free time studying, but her interests extend beyond work. She runs to clear her head and unwinds with reality television and fast food—habits she prefers to keep to herself. Her favorite Pokémon is Glaceon.

Even her workspace adds to her characterization. The medical office resembles a dingy middle school nurse’s room, fitting Pony Express’s cheap, impersonal approach to crew comfort. Anya is expected to provide care inside a workplace that offers little care in return.

These everyday details give her a life beyond the ship’s crisis: academic persistence, private comforts, and plans for a future she is still trying to reach.
